Bye Bye, Purplz

Posted in General on November 30, 2008 by rocklawthepally

So I only have 2 purplz left – Libram of Souls Redeemed and Essence of the Martyr.  All other gear has been replaced.  Nothing is gemmed or enchanted and some is quest reward gear that will be replaced as I continue the level 80 dungeons.

As I confirm that I have the best-in-slot for 80 reg and 80 heroic, I will gem/chant the items.

Plans are for an intial Naxx run on Tuesday.  Crossing my fingers.  I will be flying through gear in the coming weeks and the AH prices for chanting mats are retarded.  Hold the raid back with unoptimized gear or go broke and not have raiding mats?  Hmmmm.

Stay tuned.

On to Icecrown

So I finished off Storm Peaks last night (but for one group quest) and am into Icecrown now.  Having a blast with all the questing.  Granted, I’m using Quest Helper and am flying through the content.  I will likely move more slowly on my mage when it comes time to level.  Well, killing will be faster, but I may take my time and actually read the quests.

From a gameplay standpoint, Lich King has been really well designed.  Each zone has its own unique feel and its own pacing.  You get the feeling that each area has its own set of enemies/factions besieging it and that you’re dealing with separate parts of a larger battle.  It’s tied together with a far better sense of an overall story arc than BC was.

Fighting mobs in the highest level zone has not been particularly difficult.  With gear upgrades via instances/quests, I’m not finding myself getting bashed around too badly.  Killing is, as I have said before, slow, but I’m holding my own.  Hopefully 3.0.4 will give me some extra damage – just in time to not benefit my questing lol.

Anyway, looking forward to finishing the final quest zone and getting on with levelling skills/factions.

3.0.4 Looks Like Some Love

So our old nemesis Ghostcrawler dropped by the damage dealing forum and dropped this little tidbit on the holy/prot pally community:

  • Judgements of the Pure: This Holy talent now increases the damage done by Seals and Judgements in addition to its current effects.
  • Hand of Judgement – All paladins receive a single-target, 30 yard taunt on an 8 sec cooldown. This spell also does minor Holy damage in order to break CC and the like for pulling ease.

So, not only are we getting some buffage to Seals/Judgments but we are getting a little extra damage spell to mix into our rotations.  Yay for holy solo pve content.

My current rotation looks something like this while soloing: Hit Seal of Wisdom (and refresh it after every 2 minute duration is over), hit Holy Shock, Judge Light, hit the new Shield of Righteousness, then back to Holy Shock, rinse and repeat until the mob is dead.  Depending on the situation, I toss in Consecrate as well.  I always hit Divine Favor when it’s up.  Below 20%, I hit Hammer of Wrath (usually only once before the mob is dead).

Now I can grind on 3 or 4 mobs my own level at a time with this method.  It’s not fast but it does work.  My mage 2-3 shots everything he encounters (fire spec for awesomeness but will likely change to frost or arcane once I start leveling him).  It’s sooo much faster to kill stuff as a mage that I really feel the pain while doing solo pve content on my pally.  Having a bump to one of my baseline abilities like Seals/Judgments is really appealing.  Right now, they feel completely useless from a damage perspective.  They work fine for keeping health and mana up but they’re a waste of time for killing things.

I’ll hop on the PTR when it comes up and see how this works out.  I’m pretty excited about this.

80.  Woot!  Still sporting some T5/T6 and badge gear.  Very few blue holy plate quest rewards and haven’t run too many of the level 80 dungeons yet.  Spell power still in the 1150 range.  Health in the 12.5 k range, mana pool around 13 k.

Damage output is still centered around Holy Shock.  Consecrate ticking for about 187. Please, can I haz dooo-al spec now?  I’ve been stowing away ret gear and would love to dual spec right about now.

Off to do Storm Peaks and Icecrown now that Scholozar is done.

76 and a new weapon!

My first significant upgrade (apart from some boots and bracers from Nexus quest rewards) came my way last evening just before dinging 76.  Some guildies and I did the level 75 arena challenge in Zul’Drak and I picked up a blue mace to replace the T6 badge mace.

Woot! is all I can say.

At 75, things change

I dinged 75 and got a new rank of Holy Shock.  Man, what a change.  New Consecrate, too.  Also, Righteous Shield, which is a prot talent given to all pallies and which is based off of block value.  Given that I’m still running the shield from Magtheridon and no other gear with block value, it is only a minor bump.

All in all, tho, it’s not been bad thus far since diniging 75.  Starting to feel a little more power.  It will prove itself out when I start on mobs my own level.  For the time being, I’m working on mobs around Azul’Nerub and trying to finish off Dragonblight.

More soon, but good times are returning.

Day 3 – Judgements suck. Healing’s fun.

So the nerf to Ret hit us hard.  Pretty much our only soloing damage spell is Holy Shock.  Judgments are fairly useless.  I’m fully Holy at level 74 (but for Kings – why is this 5 points, Blizzard?) and the only way I can do decent damage is with Holy Shock.  Judgments hit for less than 1k – a good deal less, actually.

Here’s my typical rotation on non-demon/undead mobs:

Fire up Seal if Wisdom, hit Holy Shock, Judge Light, consecrate, hit Divine Favor (for a guaranteed crit next time), rinse and repeat as cooldowns are ready.  With demons/undead, I add Exorcism/Holy Wrath when they are avail.

It just doesn’t seem strong.  Esp the undead/demon stuff.

My crits in roughly 1200 spellpower gear from Holy Shock are 2400-2500 ish.  HS is the bulk of my damage.

All that said, healing’s a good deal more fun.  I ran the Nexus yesterday and was really worried about the mobile nature of the final Boss fight. I lost one player, but not due to my lack of being able to heal, but due to the knockback.  HS as a healing mech, esp if it crits, is awesome.  I find myself using HS in my regular rotation on off targets a lot.  Think I will be stacking crit :)
