Saurfang dead again. Finally.

Whew.  We finally nailed it for the second time last night.  That Saurfang fight is such a pita.  And I feel so helpless because, as a healer, I can’t really contribute anything.  It’s all on the DPS.  But last night, they were on their game.  Extra-special kiting skill paid off.  Looking forward to new content.  Time for a visit to Tankspot to check up on Festergut and Rotface.

3 upgrades yesterday.   A ring, a cloak and a belt.  ilvl 268, 264 and 251 respectively.  Only 2 pieces of 232 gear left on the holy side.

We also managed to do the frost giant weekly (which is where the belt dropped).  Fun fight.

The odd thing about Icecrown is that I spend much of my time in ret mode.  I am ret on trash up to Marrowgar, then switch to healing for that fight.  Then I’m back to ret for the Lady Deathwhister trash and I tank her for the first phase until the shield is down.  Then I’m ret for the trash leading to the boat.  I switched to heals for the frost giant weekly, but went back to ret as a gunner/add DPS for the boat.  I switch to heals for Saurfang because I do so much AoE splash damage that it would be a bad idea for me to be doing damage when his adds pop.  My resto shammy buddy goes enhancement for that fight (in fact, he brought in his hunter last night, which was the thing that turned the tide).

I really need better ret gear, tho.  5/5 T9 is OK, but this is T10 content.  The good thing is that the raid’s pally tank got a bunch of off-spec DPS upgrades last night, so now they’re on rot and default to me next time they drop :)  And I will be spending Triumphs on the 245 upgrade badge gear, depending on set bonuses.

After the raid, we pugged an XT weekly and a VOA to total 20 frosts in one day.  I tried a daily, but the group wiped on early trash and I was too tired to stick it out.

Anywho, it’s off to new content!

Progress…. stalled (it’s all good, though)

Damn maintenance.  Cost us nearly 2 hours.  Only got through Lady Deathwhisper.

Marrowgar was a pita this week.  It’s such a random fight and folks were, well, dying in a fire.  Now I know sometimes you get zapped by multiple flames at once and that it can be tough to avoid, but really.

In unrelated news, Coriel over at Blessing of Kings was musing about Blackwing Lair and whether it was a boring instance.  I found it to be epic and a great deal of fun.  Just wrangling 40 people into an instance back in the day was a feat in itself.  Cat herding ftw.  Add to that resist-gear stacking (“farming” Ony for cloaks, anyone?), the difficulty of even making flasks (Scholo, anyone?), managing buffs across 40 people (pally buffs, anyone?) and the difficulty of threat management without tools like Omen and you have a huge effort just getting in the door.

The fights themselves may look trivial by today’s difficulty standards, but consider them in the context of vanilla WoW.  Vael, for example, was a guild-breaking fight.  We wiped for weeks before getting it down.  It was a DPS race with what remains a unique mechanic: you knew you were going to lose people.  You just hoped it wasn’t your healers early on.  You hoped the tanks could build enough threat so as each one died and a new one swapped in some random DPS would not pull aggro.  Unlimited mana/energy/rage can only get you so far if folks blow up in the middle of the raid!  Oh, and that bastard has to this day never dropped THE SHIELD!

Stupid Borked Maintenance

7:26 pm – Stuck at Retrieving character list for 30 minutes. Sigh.

8:12 pm – char list retrieved.  Pwned by the Blue Loading Bar Boss!  Stay Tuned!

WTB DPS – Really, really WTB DPS

Saurfang is the bane of our existence at the moment.  We just do not have the horsepower to kill him.  The best we got to was around 50% before folks started dropping dead or we hit the hard enrage wall.

We even dropped back to 2 heals (me being one of them).  With 5 range, 1 melee, 2 tanks and 2 heals you’d think it would be doable.  But no.  I do not want to cast aspersions on my DPS brethren (especially since I do DPS on a  couple fights now), but man, they gotta step up their game.  We need 4k minimum from each of them, I’d say, and no one is getting there.  Yes, they are having to switch from add to boss to add, etc., but at the end of the day, that does not matter.  Hard DPS needs to be the word of the day.  There’s no one to pull aggro from, really, so balls to the wall.  Blow cooldowns, use the appropriate flasks/pots/food – just hit it as hard as possible.

Bottom line – shit’s gotta die a LOT faster on Saurfang and until it does, we’re spinning our wheels.

Looking to Rock ICC 10

No pun intended.

All drama aside, I’m hoping to crack the plague wing tomorrow night on night one of our raid week, as long as we can solve the Saurfang dilemma.

Tips for holy pallies on the lower wing:

3 healers on Marrowgar is helpful.  Perhaps I suck, but when your AoE/raid healer gets spiked and a bunch of your DPS are not on the boss’ ass where they should be, it gets tough.  Also, Marrowgar is a BIG HEAL fight, where it is preferable to have a deep mana pool and use Holy Light over Flash or Shock.

Deathwhisper, the Boat and Saurfang are all easily 2-healable.  Indeed, last week, I was tasked to go ret on Deathwhisper since most of my damage is yellow.  Big swinging <insert your term of choice here>.  One shot, btw.

So holy pallies, bring yer pots and bring yer mana pool.  On Marrowgar, be ready to move.  Beacon your tanks for the whole wing, as per usual, and keep that Sacred Shield HoT up.

Profit.

Implosion

We fell apart. We went to two 10-man teams and folks that should have been in the main progression raid were being stuck in the gear-up 10-man ToC. Folks got annoyed. Folks left.

I left. There are only so many times I will do one step forward, two steps back before I call BS.

I went with the team that was the heart of the progression group. I did this because I want to see Arthas die sometime before Cataclysm comes out. Dammit.

I will post something more coherent in the next day or so. Somthing that might actually be helpful for paladins.
