Lord Marrowgar down

Posted in General with tags , , , , on December 23, 2009 by rocklawthepally

Lord Marrowgar is dead as of last week.  Sadly, it was after his nerfs.  I’m firmly of the belief we would have had him on his original mode, but what the hey.  We’ll take it.  Subsequently, we got Lady Deathwhisper to 25% of her mana last week in phase 1, as well.

Seems the powers that be decided we’ve suspended raiding for the next two weeks due to the holidays.  Thankfully, one of our tanks stepped up and posted an impromptu run for ICC 10 tomorrow night.  It’s listed as a rep farming run, which I hate.  Kill the boss or get the fuck out of the instance.  For me, rep is ancillary in an instance that represents progression.  True, it’s been a long while since we’ve seen a new rep associated with a new raid, but for chrissakes, that new ring ain’t gonna make or break the raid.

So.  Tomorrow, if we have the right peeps, we kill Marrowgar and Deathwhisper and then go strap on our rocket packs!  If not, then I go farm herbs.  Here’s hoping we have 10 of our best :)

Merry Christmas to all.

Been killing Harpies, sorry

Posted in General with tags , , , , on December 1, 2009 by rocklawthepally

We’ve been clearing (or not) T9 content each week, so that’s all cool.  We’ve welcomed some great new folks to the guild as well as a really good old friend (Heya Mop, glad to have you back).  Some of those we’ve taken into Ulduar 10 and I got to help on my favorite fight in the game for Lich King – the Iron Council.  Then we went on to Freya and the DPS check bit us in the ass.  I have some control in Iron Council by keeping folks alive.  Freya needs the DPS to be on the spot and on target.  Nothing I can do to help there except yell expletives over vent, which I choose not to do.  Don’t suck is my only advice to the DPS.

But I’ve become stuck on getting the Savory Deviate Delight recipe, which is the last cooking recipe I can get that I’m aware of (there’s a Horde-only one I may need to send my rogue off to get).  Been killing harpies in NW Barrens for days (I’m told they are the best farming spot), with no luck yet.  Ah well, yet another obsession :)

As a result of a couple of MC and BWL runs recently, I am on the last leg of the Sceptre of the Shifting Sands quest and need only 2 more elementium ore.  All the Dummies books are in and I have all the mats but two.  Am almost flat broke getting them off the AH at 500-600 per.  Thankfully, we have a BWL run scheduled for Friday.  I really want to see how this thing ends.  The bonus is that I am reassembling a T2 set (have shoulders, legs, chest and head (from pre-buff Ony) so I look the part now).  Everyone agrees that the pally T2 was the best looking set in the game back in the day.  The only missing visible bits are the gloves and belt so once I have those, and once that bastard Vael drops the frakkin’ shield, I will be set.

Reset tomorrow, so more Ony, VoA and ToC 10.  Hopefully the damn Faction Champs will cooperate more this week.

Sarth 1D, Noblegarden and more

Posted in General with tags , , , , on April 27, 2009 by rocklawthepally

Last night, we one-shot Kel’Thuzad for our guild 2nd kill on 25-man and proceeded to do Sartharion with 1 drake up.  That took a few tries, but we eventually got it.  Then we went over to Coldarra for some work on 25-man Malygos.  We’re at the point where we get to phase 3 consistently.  Now it’s a question of getting comfortable with the vehicle phase, which is by no means an easy feat.

I’ve also begun the Noblegarden stuff.  Man, can you say crowded?  Each of the 4 starter towns are madly camped, making egg collecting a royal pain in the ass.  I have a few of the achievements so far and thankfully have some time over the next few days to complete the meta-achievement.  Hopefully, Blizzard’s RNG will be kinder to me than it has been on my quest for the turtle mount.  3500+ catches thus far and still no luck.

Latest PTR Notes

Posted in General with tags , , , , , on March 16, 2009 by rocklawthepally

The latest PTR notes are up here and there’s a ton of interesting new stuff, both from a pally’s perspective and from a broader view.

First, the pally stuff.

So they removed Spiritual Attunement from the trainers and made it instead a deep protection talent.  This is actually fine by me.  They say they may look at Illumination in terms of compensating for the lost mana regen and that, too, is fine by me.  Since I’m stacking crit, having more mana back from that talent would be nice.  I always found SA to be a freebie mana regen mechanic for the holy spec that was never really intended for us.

The other changes to holy are pretty insignificant and are largely pvp-based.

Alchemy:

  • You can now sometimes find Alchemist’s Caches from bosses in Ulduar. Only players with an Alchemy skill of 425 or higher can loot these secret caches.

Nice little gift for us alchies :)  Wonder what these caches will contain.

Cooking:

  • A new recipe has been added to cooking trainers for making Black Jelly, using several Borean Man ‘O War as ingredients. While it looks disgusting, it restores more health and mana than the highest level food.
  • Flint and Tinder is no longer necessary for creating a campfire. You’re just that resourceful!
  • Ingredients such as Spices, Apples, and the like have been removed from most cooking recipes.
  • Players no longer need to complete the Clamlette Surprise quest to gain Artisan cooking. The quest now offers the unique recipe, Clamlette Magnifique. If you already completed the quest, you can visit Dirge Quickcleave in Gadgetzan to learn this recipe (for free).
  • Several Northrend recipes were given greater skill up ranges to make it easier to reach 450 cooking skill.
  • You no longer need to learn cooking from books. The trainers have finally done their reading and are able to teach you the same thing.

This is full of win all around.  My mage is not yet maxed in cooking so I will hold off that painful grind until this hits the live realms.  Getting those last few points in cooking as it currently stands is incredibly painful.  Making 40-50 items for a couple of skill points is more than a little ridiculous.

Fishing:

  • A new (and very rare) special mount can now be caught from Northrend fishing pools.
  • A new clam, the Giant Darkwater Clam, can be obtained by fishing in Wintergrasp. This mighty clam has a greatly increased chance to drop pearls, and yields up to five times the regular amount of clam meat.
  • New fishing dailies are now offered from Marcia Chase in Dalaran City!
  • Players are no longer required to do the Nat Pagle, Angler Extreme quest to gain Artisan fishing. The quest now offers a special superior-quality fishing pole instead. If you already completed the quest, you can visit Nat Pagle in Dustwallow Marsh to receive this new fishing pole.
  • The time needed to catch fish has been reduced.
  • You can now fish anywhere, regardless of skill. Every catch has the potential for fishing skill gains, but you are likely to catch worthless junk in areas that are too difficult for your skill.
  • You can now fish in Wintergrasp, and the fishin’ is good!
  • You no longer need to learn fishing from books. The trainers have finally done their reading and are able to teach you the same thing.

More beneficial changes to one of my favorite pastimes.  Less time to catch is nice, but I’m from the old school who maxed 2 toons in the old 30-second/chance to lose fish on cast days, so this is just gravy for me.  Eliminating the level requirement from zones is a little annoying, but it does not apply to me as both my primary toons are max level already.  The thing I’m looking forward to the most are the new fishing dailies.  No mention of rewards, but hopefully there’s some new pole buffs and +fishing gear to wear.  Oh, and the mount would be leet – hopefully not as rare Mr. Pinchy.

Herbalism:

  • Find Herbs no longer tracks Glowcaps.
  • Northrend herbs now yield more herbs on average.
  • The herbalism requirement for gathering Tiger Lily has been reduced to 375.
  • The time it takes to gather herbs has been reduced.

Whee!  More herbs in less time.  What’s not to like?  I farm on Saturday afternoons and make a crapton of gold by selling what I gather in Storm Peaks.  I rarely aggro mobs and collect a pile of herbs while listening to podcasts, etc.  This will just make my life that much easier.

So Blizzard has done another round of their “making things easier” buffs to the game in general.  Well done, Blizzard!

Lots and lots of money!

With dual specs incoming, there’s a new gold sink on the way. So I’ve been farming quite a bit lately. Firecracker Salmon goes for about 85-100 gold on my server and I’ve found my own little private lake in Grizzly Hills (no, I won’t tell you where) that supplies me with quite a lot of it. Being an herbie, I also farm a lot of Lichbloom and Icethorn (while keeping an eye out for the Time-Lost proto drake).  These are worth a lot of coin, as well.

I’m not a crazy farmer, but I do get into spurts of it from time to time.  I’ll spend a Saturday afternoon mindlessly running around Storm Peaks or Icecrown picking flowers or standing at my lake in Grizzly Hills fishing away.  Not only does it keep me supplied with raiding mats, but I can ship all this stuff off to my lvl 1 nekkid gnome bank alt in IF for fun and profit.  I also like the fact that almost all the herb nodes in Icecrown and Storm Peaks do not involve aggroing mobs, so things go that much faster ;)

I will likely never have the 20k mammoth or the Kirin Tor rings, but I will hopefully have enough to pick a second spec and gem/chant a second set of gear once dual specs drop.  I have yet to decide whether to go ret or prot, but I am assembling a respectable set of both.  The only thing really missing at this point is a weapon in each case.  Sigh.
