Ulduar 10 and the new Holy Paladin

Posted in General with tags , , , , on August 27, 2009 by rocklawthepally

We’re back to progression in a pretty serious manner.  Yay for me!  We got Ignis last week and Iron Council last night.  Yes, I know.  Yawn for many of you.  But my guild went through a pretty severe contraction with the departure of many for 25-man horizons in bigger guilds.  I was on the cusp of that myself before being treated disrespectfully by the guild by whom I was finally accepted.  So my return to progression and not just badge farming in Naxx is pretty exciting.  By the way, if I never see the inside of Naxx again on my main, it will be too soon.  I could probably solo heal it in 10-man by this point.

Holy Paladins have changed quite a bit, some good and some bad.  I see Ulduar 25-geared pallies with 28-29k mana pools and now I know why.  Crit ain’t what she used to be.  While I still have to use the occasional Holy Light, it’s now all about Sacred Shield and spammage of Flash of Light.  Keeping those HoTs up, combined with Beacon of Light and the occasional Holy Shock seems to work well.  The only trouble is on really long fights like Iron Council.

Timing is everything.  I have a local recast macro for Beacon of Light and am going to set one up for Sacred Shield as well.  The extra crit from that, combined with the HoTs work really well.  Beacon is still an expensive spell to cast, but I find that for most fights thus far, I can keep two tanks alive with the help of the occasional tick from a shammy’s chain heal hitting the second tank.

Running Divine Plea is something I also need to macro, if I can.  I already have Divine Illumination macro’d to go off every time it’s up.  I’ll have to add Avenging Wrath to that to complete the triumvirate, I guess.

As for gear, I’m eyeballing the deadly MP5 again, as well as epic intellect gems.  With about 2215 spell power unbuffed and with that climbing to around 2600-2800 with full raid buffs and trinkets (Eye of the Broodmother and Forethought Talisman are a rocking combo, btw), totems and whatnot, I feel that I have enough spellpower.  I need a deeper mana pool and better mana regen.

So, am I happy?  With the general healing mechanics, yes.  I’m not happy with what 3.2 did to both my mana pool and the regen I have.  Gonna go tonight and look at replacing crit gems with int or MP5.  Sigh.  Man up, Rocklaw (or should that be Dwarf up?)!  Do it for progression or gtfo :)

Staying Put

I was accepted into another guild after a two week wait and some jerkish behaviour by their GM.  Her sense of humour did not amuse me.  I told them to go pound sand.  I’m sticking it out with my friends.  How well we’ll do, I have no idea.

Venturing into Naxx 10 with my mage tonight :)

The Death Knight Cometh

Working on the Death Knight lately.  Dinged 64 last night and should be hitting Northrend by the end of the weekend, hopefully.  Skipping all the superfluous crap and achievements, not worrying about rested or anything else of that sort.  I’m just ploughing through, stopping only to keep my mining in line.

It looks as though our leadership has decided that we’re more or less done with Naxx.  Many folks still need stuff from that instance, but we’re sharding a lot more stuff lately and if we all need only a few pieces, then it’s time to move on.  I’m all for the move to Ulduar.  Bring on the wipefest.  I miss progression raiding.  Those nights in SSC and The Eye, having our asses handed to us on a regular basis.  I’ll have to stock up on frost lotus for flasks, but since I farmed the turtle mount, I have all the salmon in the world.

Also considering taking the warlock back to Outland to farm gold by finishing up all the quests in Nagrand, Blade’s Edge, Netherstorm and Shadowmoon Valley.  That would net a ton of coin and not take all that long.

Suffice to say, I’m still really busy in-game.  Lots to do.

The Noble Patron Loot Whore

Well, that’s 2 more World Events down. The Noblegarden one wasn’t too bad, except for all the egg camping that was going down on the first few days. That was a bit of a pain in rear.

Children’s week also was not too bad, except for the PvP. Not ever having done any of the battlegrounds for real, I was completely clueless as to what I was supposed to do. The hardest one had to be Eye of the Storm, and apparently I’m a noob because I capped the flag while we did not hold the middle. Too bad, hard-core PvPers, at least I stuck around to finish the thing off. Next most difficult would have to be the Arathi Basin achievement – that one took several tries. Warsong Gulch was pretty simple and Alterac Valley was a breeze. I’m just happy to have the whole thing done.

On to more important matters.  I’m pretty close to broke because I did just enough Argent dailies to grab myself a Claymore of the Prophet and then had to gem and enchant all my ret gear.  I had forgotten just how much fun ret can be.  Stuff dies so damn fast, it’s ridiculous.  I’ve run a couple of instances as ret now and I’m having a blast.  Also on the loot whore front, I scored big time in Naxx 25 the other night, picking up my T7.5 helm and the caster sword from Kel’Thuzad.  Not content with the +50 spellpower enchant for the best in slot weapon I will be carrying for a long while to come, I blew a wad on getting the +63 version.

Sarth 1D, Noblegarden and more

Last night, we one-shot Kel’Thuzad for our guild 2nd kill on 25-man and proceeded to do Sartharion with 1 drake up.  That took a few tries, but we eventually got it.  Then we went over to Coldarra for some work on 25-man Malygos.  We’re at the point where we get to phase 3 consistently.  Now it’s a question of getting comfortable with the vehicle phase, which is by no means an easy feat.

I’ve also begun the Noblegarden stuff.  Man, can you say crowded?  Each of the 4 starter towns are madly camped, making egg collecting a royal pain in the ass.  I have a few of the achievements so far and thankfully have some time over the next few days to complete the meta-achievement.  Hopefully, Blizzard’s RNG will be kinder to me than it has been on my quest for the turtle mount.  3500+ catches thus far and still no luck.

Instance Servers FTL!

Posted in General with tags , , on April 16, 2009 by rocklawthepally

Naxx was on the schedule last night and things began smoothly around 7:30 server time on Malfurion. I got my raid invite and popped into the instance. No problem.

Generally, I log into vent but don’t put on the headset until close to pull time. Since I run vent on a different machine, I leave the vent window visible when not on the headset so I can see the level of vent chatter via the flickering speaker icons. I was noticing quite a lot of it, coupled with folks logging off and not returning on their mains.

Queue the headset. I got in on the tail end of a conversation that indicated that the raid night was likely buggered due to the fact that people could not log off without alt-F4 and getting stuck at the loading screen trying to get back in. I tried it myself and, yep, the instance server was hosed. End of raid night.

So I went off to my warlock and did my 3rd set of opening quests for the Argent Tournament. Daily cash ftw.

Will 3.1 Break My Raid?

Posted in General with tags , , , on April 14, 2009 by rocklawthepally

3.1 has come down so I guess I know what I’ll be doing tonight, and it isn’t raiding. We had a regular Naxx 25 run scheduled, but we all know how painful patch days can be. We’ll be re-speccing (and dual-speccing, in some cases), getting our mods updated, etc. And that’s AFTER we get the patch installed.

Will this affect my raid week after today?  Maybe.  Some may be itching to get into Ulduar, whether we’re quite ready for it or not.  Last night, we wiped repeatedly on KT, due to a number of factors, primarily people not doing what they were supposed to be doing.

I suspect 3.1 will be cause for a few bumpy days.  I’d prefer to take the rest of the week off from raiding just to let the dust settle, and also to get in on the Argent Tournament action :)
